Lambeth Council plans street improvements in Stockwell
Residents in Stockwell and North Brixton are being asked about the improvements they would like to see made to their local streets. Lambeth Council plans to spend £6 million in these areas as part of a wider investment programme taking place across the entire borough.
A three week consultation has been launched which will give local people a say in how the money is used, with a number of proposals having been put forward to boost road safety and create a more pleasant environment for pedestrians and cyclists.
They include the widening of pavements, the planting of shrubs and trees and the introduction of one way streets, cycle hire schemes and 20mph zones in certain areas - all improvements that could further boost the appeal of property to rent in Stockwell, as well as parts of Brixton.
Stockwell is already a popular area for young professionals, offering good transport links into the centre of London and more affordable rents than neighbouring areas such as Clapham.
Construction work is due to begin in January next year and continue for a period of four months. There are then plans to rejuvenate two more parts of Lambeth over the next three years as part of what the council is calling the Neighbourhood Enhancement Programme.
The consultation in Stockwell and North Brixton will close on December 7th and according to Pete Robbins, cabinet member for neighbourhood services, it represents a fantastic opportunity for residents to have their say.
"We have already been working with many residents to get ideas about what they'd like us to spend money on this year. Now we want all interested residents to tell us which of their proposals they'd like us to put into action," he remarked.
"I'd urge everyone in North Brixton and Stockwell to go on the council's website, take a look at the proposals and give us their response by December 7th."
