Lambeth Council announces £1m recycling savings
Lambeth Council has saved over £1 million on its waste disposal costs in the past year.
Londoners searching for property to rent in Lambeth may be encouraged to make a move to the area off the back of the announcement. Initially, the local authority had set itself the target of saving £500,000 over a 12-month period, but it has more than doubled this mark.
The recycling rate of the borough is now at 46 per cent, while the number of residents putting out orange sacks has risen to 81 per cent from 44 per cent.
Councillor Lorna Campbell, Labour party member and cabinet member for environment and sustainability, stated: "By making small changes to the way we deal with our waste and increasing the amount we recycle, we can make a big difference and not only save money, but help the environment".
In total, there were 20,000 tonnes of rubbish dealt with in an environmentally-friendly manner in 2011, which equals seven London Eyes. Between April and October of last year some 497 compost bins were sold, while over 5,000 households have requested to be part of a garden waste collection service.
The Recyclebank reward scheme has been introduced in order to make it easier for homeowners on estates to get involved. Individuals who take part can get up to £75 off anything from the price of a meal, books and clothing.
An environment blog has also been launched by the council to keep people up-to-date with the latest green improvements in the borough. It will also carry a range of helpful tips for those keen to embrace recycling.
Individuals considering staying in the location may also be happy to discover that council tax is to be frozen for the 2012-13 financial year. This represents the fourth year in a row that the service has not gone up.
