Hounslow hands out fines for litter
The borough of Hounslow is working hard to reduce litter and keep the streets clean and tidy for residents. As part of the area's war on grime, the council has implemented new measures aimed at discouraging people from dropping litter, which impacts the appearance of the borough.
One of the measures is handing out fines to those that are caught littering. More than 50 on-the-spot fines were given out during the two weeks up until December 18th to those that failed to use rubbish bins.
Councillor Amrit Mann, deputy leader of Hounslow Council and cabinet member for environment, said: “As part of our drive to make Hounslow one the cleanest boroughs in the capital, we decided to intensify our war on grime crime.
“I am confident this surge in fines will reap dividends with cleaner streets across the borough.”
Since the start of the month, 401 warning letters and 51 fines have been given out by Hounslow Council's litter enforcement teams. These have been given to both residents and businesses in the area. The letters were sent to those that have been putting rubbish out for collection on the wrong days.
Placing rubbish out for collection on an incorrect day can lead to more litter ending up on the streets as a result of damaged bin bags or bins being knocked over. It is hoped that the warning letters will make people more aware of when they should be putting their bins out and ultimately help with the appearance of the borough.
Rob Gillespie, Hounslow Highways service director, said: “We are proud to be making a difference. We will not hesitate to use our enforcement powers to stop these litterlouts from making a mess of the borough’s streets.”
Councillor Mann added that the crackdown on litter on the streets of the borough is not just for Christmas and will continue well into the new year as work continues to improve the appearance of the area for residents, businesses and visitors.
