Hounslow Council launches recycling campaigns
People occupying flats to rent in Hounslow are to be encouraged to recycle via a new drive by the local authority to promote greener lifestyles.
To mark the new year, Hounslow Council is highlighting the range of recycling facilities and promotions available to local residents in a bid to improve the rate of reuse for organic waste and electrical equipment.
The first of these schemes comes as part of the national WEEE Recycle project and is calling on people to dispose of their old waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) in a responsible manner.
Hounslow Council is following recommendations from WEEE Connect for regional authorities and businesses to promote recycling of old gadgets following the end of the Christmas period, a time when many people have received new electronic devices as gifts.
Corinna Smart, Hounslow Council's cabinet member for environment, noted that the area has performed strongly in the past in terms of WEEE recycling.
"In 2011, via our household waste recycling centres, we managed to divert over 305 tonnes of waste electronics from landfill," she noted.
Concurrent to this, the council is also reminding residents of the existence of a special home composting initiative, which is making compost bins available to locals from only £10.49 including delivery, down from the usual price of £29.95.
This offer runs until March 31st 2012, while a buy one, get one half-price promotion is also in operation to help encourage people to make use of the more than one-third of household waste that is made of compostable material.
Councillor Smart said this represents an easy and effective way of reducing the amount of daily waste produced by households, which can deliver benefits both for gardens and the environment as a whole.
"It is simple to do and once you get started, you will be surprised at just how much daily household waste can be recycled this way," she added.
