Hendon: A quaint and diverse suburb in the heart of north London

Hendon: A quaint and diverse suburb in the heart of north LondonHendon is a lively, and diverse suburb located in the north London borough of Barnet. It is an ideal location for travelling to other parts of the city, with excellent transport links, plenty of amenities, and good quality housing.

The area is steeped in ancient history, and was formerly a parish of Middlesex before it got absorbed into London.

Due to its cultural history, the area has a number of historical landmarks, and plenty of places of interest.

These include the RAF Museum, police training college, the Welsh Harp, Hendon Hall Hotel (where FA Cup Final teams would often stay), Middlesex University and Brent Shopping centre.

History

Hendon is derived from the word 'Hendun' meaning 'at the highest hill'. Archaeological remains from ancient Rome have been found there by the Hendon and District Archaeological Society and other researchers.

In the 1800s, Hendon saw the arrival of the Midland Railway and the Great Northern Railways.

It also formally became known as an urban district in 1894.

However, the area really began to transform with the arrival of the Northern Line of the underground in the 1920s.

During that era, major developments, and demographic changes gradually saw it become a part of London, when it grew more industrialised, although there are pockets of countryside.

Historically, Hendon has been a major centre for the manufacturing industry, which included motor and aviation works.

During the 1930s, another major redevelopment occurred when the civil parish of Edgware was added to Hendon.

Property

Hendon is a huge property source for anyone who values affordable prices and a wide range of choice.

It does have a lower rate of homeownership than the national average, however, rental properties are in high demand there.

Consumers can pick up a wide range of property, including flats, terraced housing, large, Victorian homes and maisonettes.

It also has a fairly high level of social rented homes available, which make up around 13.1 per cent of rental take-up.

In West Hendon you are likely to find more affordable properties and here you can pick up houses and conversions at very competitive prices, compared to other parts of London.

Hendon Central has a number of newer apartments, although you can also find a fair selection of large, detached homes.

It is ideal for large families wanting to upsize, or young professionals, wanting a place to live.

You will also find a fair selection of quaint little colleges and semi detached houses here - a much wider selection than in some other parts of London.

However, it should be noted that most of these will be located in the suburban area of Mill Hill.

Amenities

Hendon is a fantastic place for shopping. It has a thriving little town centre, and a number of malls and facilities, such as the Brent Cross Shopping Centre.

Here, you can pick up pretty much anything you will need without having to travel to some of the bigger areas.

Quality of life

The quality of life in Hendon is very good. Hendon is known to be a fairly safe area, with wide pavements.

There are a number of good schools in the area, with a wide selection of both primary and secondary schools and colleges.

It also has excellent transport links, with buses and trains running on a regular basis.

Demographics

Hendon tends to attract a lot of older people, due to its quiet and laid-back lifestyle. Almost a third of the population in Hendon is 45 or older.

It is also very diverse, and is home to a large Jewish community.
