Harrow council drives energy changes
Residents in the London borough of Harrow are being encouraged by the council to take part in a district-wide initiative called the Big Energy Switch, which has the potential to help consumers save up to £200 a year on their energy bills with the use of collective buying power.
Those who sign up to the scheme by April 8th will receive their energy from a supplier, which will be decided by an auction taking place on April 9th. The provider that promises the cheapest tariff for Harrow's residents will win the contract.
According to Harrow Council, the scheme, which will eventually be adopted by every London borough, has already attracted interest from hundreds of people. However, the local authority was quick to remind residents that bargaining power could be significantly increased if more people signed up.
Designed in response to ever-rising gas and electricity prices, the initiative was launched with senior citizens in mind as they may be reluctant to switch the heating on during the colder months for fear of the increasing costs. However, anyone who pays a household energy bill is eligible to take part.
"Gas and electricity bills are rising steadily each year. It puts a strain on residents' pockets and means some people are reluctant to switch on the heating when they need it most," commented Harrow Council leader Thaya Idaikkadar.
"This is unacceptable and Harrow Council will do everything in its power to support the borough's most vulnerable residents," he added.
The local authority has arranged for drop-in sessions to be available for those curious about the scheme to find out more, as well as the standard phone lines and website for signing up. Residents are encouraged to bring their most recent energy bill along to the meetings.
Harrow resident Bhagat Jadija, described the Big Energy Switch as "wonderful" and an absolute necessity for those at retirement age.
