Elephant and Castle leisure centre given the green light
Southwark Council's planning committee has granted planning permission for a new leisure complex in the Elephant and Castle area, which will replace the existing centre.
The new facility will cost £20 million to construct and will feature a host of state-of-the-art amenities for local people to enjoy, including the first swimming pool on the site for more than 15 years.
Plans for the leisure centre were drawn up after a public consultation launched two years ago generated an overwhelming response from residents who wanted better sporting facilities.
The existing building was closed on June 5th and preparations for its demolition began last month.
Developer Balfour Beatty is working with Southwark Council to build the new centre, while architectural firms John McAslan and Partners and S&P will be responsible for its design.
The former helped to transform King's Cross Station in Central London, while the latter worked on the Olympic Aquatics Centre in Stratford.
Not only will the revamped leisure complex provide much-needed sporting facilities for Elephant and Castle residents, but it will also help wider efforts to regenerate the area.
Southwark Council is hoping to create a brand new town centre over the coming years - an objective that could make property to rent in Elephant and Castle even more desirable.
"Elephant has been crying out for a new, up-to-date leisure centre including the swimming pool for too long and I'm delighted that we're making progress at such a pace," said the local authority's leader Peter John. "Planning consent means that we're ready to take this to the next stage."
He added: "The centre will provide first-class facilities for local people and will draw others to the area when it completes. We'll soon be able to see the physical signs of the new leisure centre taking shape on the ground; just another sign of the area's exciting and rapid transformation."
