Denmark Hill: Quiet, trendy and diverse
Denmark Hill is one of the nicer areas in Camberwell to live. Camberwell is an area located in Southwark, Greater London.
It is situated between Camberwell and East Dulwich and has many great views of Central London from some vantage points.
The locality is known for its diversity, abundant shops and amenities and music culture. Denmark Hill embodies all of these qualities and represents a fusion of different ideas and communities.
It is an up and coming district in the city, which has plenty going for it. Another plus for the area is that, compared to other parts of Southwark, it is relatively safe, with many pleasant streets and parks.
It is known for its artistic ventures, and is ideal for gritty, urban artists with a penchant for modern architecture.
Having said that, Denmark Hill does benefit from being one of the quieter, more suburban areas in the south-east of London.
It is also recognised for having more than its fair share of hospitals and medical facilities, including one of the UK's biggest A&Es.
This is particularly good for the accident-prone or those with caring responsibilities.
Properties
One of the biggest benefits of living in Denmark Hill is the price of properties. Houses are are relatively affordable and there is an unusually good range of property available here.
You can pick up anything from an ordinary terraced house, to a semi-detached, contemporary apartment, to larger properties.
It also has a number of Georgian and Victorian homes available, many of which come complete with spacious gardens that are ideal for families.
Additionally, you also have many post-war estates which vary from street to street.
In this part of London, you can pick up a decent four bedroom terraced house for around £695,000 - a price you would pay for a one bed in some other parts of the city.
Renting is fairly standard in this area, with prices starting from around £219 per week, or even £137 per week for a studio.
It should also be noted that if you don’t mind living in an ex-local authority block, prices are even more affordable.
Education
There are a good selection of both primary and secondary schools in the area, as well as a number of nursery schools and sixth form colleges.
The University of Southbank is just a stone's throw away from Denmark Hill and is situated in nearby Camberwell. The schools in the area have received a good rating from Ofsted, with the Dog Kennel Hill primary and Sacred Heart RC secondary being noted as among the best.
Community
There is a strong Afro-Caribbean community in Denmark Hill, along with a large Greek-Cypriot community.
Due to the high cost of housing in some of the surrounding areas, you also have a steady trickle of many artist communities moving into the locality.
Parks
John Ruskin's park is one of the most famous in the area. Constructed in the 1800s, the park is home to some of the most ancient trees, representing over 40 species.
It has maintained some of its traditional Edwardian features and has a pond and a pergola alongside an overgrown bowling green within it.
The park is a short walk from Denmark Hill Station and has a number of benches within it.
Shops and amenities
In Denmark Hill, as well as the wider Camberwell area, there are several shops and amenities.
Here, you can find a great selection of book stores, takeaways, hardware shops, bargain stores, and food retailers.
Transport
Transportation in the area is incredibly good and reliable. It has a number of bus routes going in all directions, as well as regular trains that can get you into the more central areas of London within ten minutes.
This makes it ideal for commuting.
