Bartlett Park improvement plans being examined
Tower Hamlets Council has confirmed that it had a good response to its six-week public consultation on plans to redevelop Bartlett Park and make major improvements for local residents, both to the park itself and the road network bordering it.
The local authority wanted to find out how many people use the park at present and what they would like to see changed or added as part of the regeneration project.
In particular, it wanted to gather opinions on the improvements that were proposed in its draft masterplan for the open space, which lies in the Poplar area of the Tower Hamlets borough.
The aim of the improvements is to make Bartlett Park a focal point for those who already live in the area and those who are seeking property to rent in Poplar.
Feedback from the consultation, which consisted of an online survey, exhibitions, workshops and drop-in sessions, will not be examined and Tower Hamlets Council will be working with landscape architects to determine the best way forward.
Proposed improvements include the addition of children's play areas an adventure playground in the main body of the park, as well as upgrades to the football pitches and changing rooms. The council also wants to improve connections between the park and the canal, known as the Limehouse Cut.
"Parks and open spaces are an important part of our community providing essential recreation, play and leisure facilities," said Tower Hamlets mayor Lutfur Rahman.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who participated in the consultation and for providing their invaluable comments, suggestions and ideas."
According to the consultation document, the main reasons residents visit Bartlett Park is to relax and to enjoy a walk, with keeping fit, playing football and picnicking also named as popular activities.
The biggest changes that respondents to the consultation wanted to see were a reduction in antisocial behaviour, improved access, aesthetic improvements and restricted access for dogs.
