Aylesbury estate in Southwark to be regenerated
A total of 4,200 new homes are to be constructed as part of the regeneration of the Aylesbury estate in Southwark.
Contracts have been signed by Southwark Council and developer L&Q for what is going to be one of the largest projects of its kind in Europe. The next phase of the scheme will see affordable, high-quality properties built on the corner of Thurlow Street and East Street.
This may interest those looking for flats to rent in Southwark, as there should be more options in the coming years.
Councillor Peter John, leader of the local authority, stated he is very happy to be partnering with L&Q in order to make the project a reality and is looking forward to seeing the exciting vision coming to fruition.
"The new buildings completed so far have been of an excellent standard that I'm proud we can offer to local people. It's important that the area retains its strong sense of community and I want to ensure that the development will benefit existing residents, as well as those who want to move there."
Andy Rowland from L&Q - which manages over 66,000 homes in the UK - noted members of the public will soon be given the opportunity to see the updated proposals. Under the terms of the plan, at least 261 new properties will be created in the next 12 months.
Families considering moving to the area will be pleased to hear that a new Ofsted report has said Southwark's children services are good, while also boasting some outstanding features. This is despite the fact the local authority has come under increasing budgetary pressures over the last couple of years.
The body complemented the borough for its strong, focused and improving set of services. Mr John stated he is glad to see that the improvements introduced have been recognised. He added no one connected with the local authority is going to get complacent as they seek to continue making enhancements.
