£310m regeneration plans unveiled in Surrey
Over £310 million has been pumped into a regeneration project in Camberley, Surrey it has been revealed.
Surrey Heath Borough Council (SHBC) set out its vision for the future, in which a new town centre will be built in the area. Infrastructure will also be improved as part of the plans.
The council claims that by 2018, it will be one of the top 100 towns in the UK. Under the proposals, the town’s central precincts, including the A30 London Road Block, Park Street, Knoll Road, High Street, the Mall Camberley and parts of Pembroke Broadway will be transformed.
Speaking about the plans, councillor Moira Gibson, leader of Surrey Heath Borough Council, said: "Delivering this vision will enable Camberley to 'step-up' to become a more regionally significant town centre, attracting even more high quality retailers and building on its reputation as a location for major events such as the recent RMA Freedom of Borough parade and the forthcoming Tour of Britain cycle race in September."
"The vision incorporates two of the town's other great strengths, its strong military heritage, and its abundance of quality parks and green space, making it a very clean, green and safe environment to spend time."
Some £180 million has already been pledged towards turning the M3 between junction 4A and junction two into smart motorway.
The council announced that it was working towards clearing any remaining legal hurdles over the next year.
Over the next five years, the council plans to deliver improvements to Guildford railway station and a flyover at Woking.
Karen Whelan, chief executive of Surrey Heath, said: "The vision also sets out ambitious plans for how the council, working with partners, will deliver a "gateway" to the town on the A30 London Road as well as the creation of a new town square and a refurbished Mall shopping centre."
