Area Comments
Supremely genteel - perhaps the most obviously so in central London - Marylebone takes great pains to be a little village that just happens to directly border one of the busiest shopping streets in the world.
Lying north of Oxford Street and stretching up past the West Way up to Regents Park, Marylebone is a little, dense network of streets in which some of the best living in London is done. In times past it was seen perhaps as a little behind the times, somewhat dominated by offices, and a little bit heavy on the traffic, but now its old-world style has come back, as its incredible convenience and real sense of being a world away from the bustly centre, despite being right inside it, has made it ultra-chic.
There are truly wonderful places to eat and drink in the Marylebone area, as well as shopping in small boutiques along and off the Marylebone High Street. This is not Oxford St - although that's dazzlingly close - but from St Christopher Place up towards the park, a great stretch of very choosy, pretty shops and eateries, little cafes and wine bars. This is a place for the people who lunch, either who live around the area, or who work close by in places like Soho, Bloomsbury and Baker Street - although many who live here work, thanks to the Jubilee Line, in Canary Wharf.
Apart from the massive, wonderful space of Regents Park, there are few proper green spaces in this small area; but there are lovely churchyards and little squares set amid the busy streets. In general however this is a place for city living at its finest, and the homes here reflect that both in style and at times the demand. There are wonderful buildings everywhere, from the BBC's Broadcasting House, the wonderful Holy Trinity Church, the Royal Institute of British Architects, Langham's Hotel, and the lovely houses on Manchester Square and Montagu Square.
There are excellent 30s and some later developments around the Baker Street area of Marylebone in which flats - the main living space here - are excellent and quite affordable for the area. In the depths of Marylebone are mansion blocks, and flats in very nice Georgian properties. The few houses here are extremely desirable, and are set in little mews lanes - beguiling, undiscovered, and fragile-fashionable, like the rest of Marylebone itself.

Fitzrovia: Variety aplenty
In central London, few places feel more foreign than Fitzrovia. The district, as well as its close neighbour Bloomsbury, is the closest a London resident can get to living in a European city. Of course, you'll have to excuse the chronic lack of sunshine, but the combination of close cobbled streets and extravagant squares gives Fitzrovia a definite Barcelona-esque feel. Its location in central London - lodged between Bloomsbury and Marylebone - makes it ideal for those who prefer their conveniences … well, convenient. You can work, shop and eat within just a few streets of where you live. Perfect.
