New Cross Gate tenants vote for council ownership
Property tenants in the South-East London neighbourhood of New Cross Gate have voted to keep their homes in the hands of the local council, hoping to secure improvements in their housing conditions.
A recent ballot revealed a majority of council housing tenants in the area to be in favour of remaining council controlled – as opposed to transferring to a private housing association – as the local government promised improvements.
Homes in New Cross Gate, in the borough of Lewisham, have been targeted as part of government plans to make all social rented homes meet the Decent Homes Standard by 2010, requiring all properties to be made fuilly wind and weather tight, and have 'modern facilities.
A council spokesman said: "Lewisham Council remains committed to taking a resident-led approach to improving homes and services in the borough.
"We will now work with New Cross Gate residents to explore a way of achieving the government's Decent Homes Standard."
A New Deal for Communities project in the area has seen areas like New Cross Gate attempt to consult residents more in a bid to improve the infrastructure, living conditions, lifestyle and job prospects of local residents – making it an increasingly attractive area to rent and buy.
