Fulham shopping arcade plans are progressing
Residents of Fulham could soon benefit from the creation of a new shopping destination due to the transformation of Fulham Town Hall. The building was sold off earlier this year by Hammersmith and Fulham Council in the hopes of creating a premier shopping destination within the borough.
American retail and leisure group Dory Ventures bought the premises and plans are progressing at a good speed for its change from Town Hall into a shopping destination. The building, which is Grade II-listed, is to be converted into a shopping arcade, with the flagship store being Maclaren. A full restoration will be done to the building to ensure it retains its original character and architectural features.
The decision to close the Town Hall and sell the building came in 2011 as the small borough had two functioning town hall facilities. Hammersmith and Fulham Council sold the building in order to live up to its commitment to make use of underused buildings and so improve amenities for residents while also reducing its debt. Currently council debt is at its lowest rate seen since 1986.
Dory Ventures were selected as the preferred purchaser in 2012 after a detailed selection process. Jerry Spano, director of development for Dory on the project said that the building was seen as the perfect option for a flagship Maclaren store, prompting the company's involvement. The firm stopped bidding for all other projects throughout London as it was determined to purchase Fulham Town Hall.
“We were attracted here because of the vibrancy of the area. There are a lot of young professionals and young couples with children and this is a real draw for us," Mr Spano said.
As well as as retail and leisure facilities, the plans for the Town Hall also include extension work to the upper floors so they can be converted into apartments. Between 15 to 20 residential units will be constructed, offering people the opportunity to live in the middle of the area. A restaurant is also to be built in the shopping arcade.
