Camberwell residents consulted over local improvements
Residents in Camberwell are being asked for their opinion on possible improvements to their local community as part of a major regeneration scheme for the area.
Southwark Council has launched an initial consultation on the issue to help it spend the £75 million that has been earmarked for the project.
All of those living within a 150-mile radius of Camberwell Green have been given a consultation questionnaire and asked to air their views.
Posters have also been placed across the district to encourage participation, while members of groups such as Friends of Camberwell Green and the SE5 Forum have also been informed.
Southwark Council has listed a number of projects it expects to take on as part of the regeneration.
For example, new homes are to be built on the Elmington Estate, which lies at the heart of Camberwell between Southampton Way and Camberwell Road.
There will also be a brand new library and civic square, as well as a new green space and park layout.
Improvements will be made to the street environment around Camberwell, as well as the local bus transport network and Denmark Hill Station.
In addition, residents will benefit from safer pedestrian and cycling facilities and improvements to Camberwell Leisure Centre.
Not only will the regeneration programme be welcomed by those who live in the area, but it could also make property to rent in Camberwell more attractive.
Councillor Veronica Ward, cabinet member for culture and regeneration, said the investment being pumped into the district will help to boost the local economy and maintain its "vibrant, creative and diverse" atmosphere.
"The new library, civic square and finished leisure centre will make a real difference to Camberwell for the existing residents and generations to come," she remarked." I'd encourage everyone to keep in touch and be fully involved in consultation as we progress these developments."
