Series of new developments to take place in Greenwich
Greenwich Council has pressed ahead with plans for a new cinema and restaurant development which will be located in Eltham town centre.
The Royal borough of Greenwich's cabinet has opted to turn a key council-owned building into a cinema complex.
These proposals came about after a lengthy consultation with residents in the area, it has been reported.
Councillor Chris Roberts, leader of the Royal borough of Greenwich said the new development is likely to encourage more people to spend money in the area.
He added: "We've looked in detail at the proposal and are very confident that a new cinema at the heart of Eltham town centre will make a big difference to the town.
"It will be a great provision for local people and we know that cinemas attract people and attract spend in town centres, which can only be good news for Eltham."
A number of cinema operators have already expressed their interest in former stores and empty spaces within the district.
Greenwich Council says it believes this new development will attract greater growth and prosperity for the area.
Mr Roberts continued: "A leading cinema operator also attracts high-street restaurants to an area so we really are confident that this move will give a real boost to Eltham and its residents. The next step is for the council to submit a planning application for this proposal."
But these proposals are not the only initiatives taking place within the borough.
It has recently been announced that a former old people's home in Woolwich will be replaced with flats for the over-60s.
Construction work on the project has already started and is expected to produce around 37 units.
The apartments will be aimed at residents who are moving from council-owned sheltered blocks and tenants who wish to downsize from under-occupied homes.
