Redevelopment of Battersea Power Station to start in 2013
The imposing structure of the Grade II listed Battersea Power Station has long been a feature of the London skyline, but it has not generated any electricity since 1983.
There have been numerous failed development plans from successive owners of the site, but now it looks as though the iconic building will finally get a new lease of life.
It was purchased by a consortium led by Malaysia's SP Setia in July last year and they have now announced that they plan to begin major redevelopment work in the second half of next year.
Preparatory work is due to begin in the coming months, so it won't be long until residents in the area start seeing some changes.
Wandsworth Council, which granted planning consent for the project last year, confirmed that phase one will include the construction of 800 new homes on the site.
These will stand above a commercial podium, which will include retail outlets, restaurants, a gym, a pool, a spa, a theatre and a number of offices.
A six-acre public park will also be built on the derelict plot, linking directly to Battersea Park.
property to rent in Battersea is already in high demand, and this new development could make the area an even more attractive place for prospective tenants.
Ravi Govindia, leader of Wandsworth Council, said the announcement represents a "significant step forward" in the transformation of the Nine Elms area.
"The district-wide regeneration programme will be one of the greatest sources of new jobs and homes in the country over the next few years," he remarked.
"The redevelopment of the power station site has an important role to play and is key to funding the Northern Line extension."
Transport for London has proposed to extend the Charing Cross branch of the London Underground's Northern Line to Battersea via a new station at Nine Elms.
