New report shows strength of Greenwich primary education
Families seeking flats to rent in Greenwich will be encouraged by new government figures that further showcase the high educational standards upheld by the area's primary schools.
Results published from Key Stage 2 tests taken by students during summer 2011 has shown that Greenwich rates among the top 25 per cent of local authorities in the country in terms of primary level results, as well as ranking ninth out of the 33 London boroughs.
According to the data, 78 per cent of Greenwich pupils met the nationally expected standard for both English and maths last year, representing an increase of three percentage points on the figure for 2010, well above the national average.
The rate of progress made in terms of English is the sixth highest in the country, while for maths Greenwich ranks second.
Meanwhile, a recent report to the Council's Children and Young People's Scrutiny Panel has shown that the number of schools in Greenwich rated by Ofsted as good is also above the national average, a trend which has been observed among nurseries and secondary schools as well as primary-level establishments.
Further support for the education sector came during Ofsted's annual assessment of children's services in Greenwich on December 13th 2011, during which the regulator stated that schools in the area are doing their bit to help pupils stay safe.
Jackie Smith, Greenwich Council's cabinet member for children and young people, said this reflects the continuous commitment by schools to drive up standards.
"However, we are not complacent and we know there is still much to be done to improve the consistency of good provision to ensure that every child and young person is safe and that every young person attends a good school," she added.
This follows an earlier report from the council last month, highlighting the "outstanding" performance of the Rachel McMillan Nursery in an Ofsted assessment.
