New homes built in the Royal Borough of Greenwich
A number of new homes are expected to be built for those over the age of 60 in Greenwich, it has been announced.
The Royal borough of Greenwich will invest £1.6 million funding for 30 new homes. The Greater London Authority has released the funding for the initiative, which will include one and two-bedroom flats and have an estimated completion date of 2016.
It will add to the two developments that are currently onsite, one of which is Mabel Polley House - a former sheltered accommodation unit for elderly people in Woolwich.
Mabel Polley House in particular is being transformed into 37 one and two-bed flats for over-60s and is due for completion in September 2015.
Royal Greenwich was one of the first local authorities in London to start building again when this was allowed in 2009.
To date, it has built 68 new homes with Local Authority New Build funding over the last three years.
This included the construction of a mixture of family-sized houses, bungalows for over-60s and a small block of flats.
Commenting on the developments, councillor Chris Kirby, the Royal borough of Greenwich cabinet member for housing said: "Royal Greenwich is pleased to be able to continue its house building programme, providing well designed, modern homes of high quality for our older residents and those with disabilities."
The homes will be built for disabled young adults and pensioners in the borough.
All of them are set to include white goods and carpets, and will meet high space, security and sustainability standards.
The council revealed that the design of the homes recently earned the developers, Bell Phillips Architects, the Housing Our Aged Population: Panel for Innovation (HAPPI) award.
The over-60s homes were built to comply with the ten principles of the HAPPI Report, which are designed to improve the quality of life for an ageing population.
