Greenwich to host Tall Ships Regatta 2014
The Royal borough of Greenwich has this Sunday (May 12th) signed an agreement that will see the district play host to the first Tall Ships event in 25 years.
Organisers Sail Training International will arrange the Tall Ships Regatta to coincide with the September 2014 Royal Greenwich Festivals celebrations, making it the first event of its kind to feature in London since the Tall Ships Race of 1989.
The borough's annual Royal Festivals have become extremely popular, attracting spectators from across London and across the world to watch the maritime celebrations that include the famous tea clipper Cutty Sark.
Greenwich Royal Festival 2013 promises to be a spectacular event, featuring a brand new river strand to welcome the return of Sail Royal Greenwich, which will allow visitors to travel up the River Thames and witness London's landmarks in an unforgettable fashion.
"Royal Greenwich is widely recognised as a premier destination for culture; its rich mix of arts and entertainment helping to attract more than 15 million of visitors from all over the UK and worldwide every year," said leader of Royal borough of Greenwich, Chris Roberts.
"We are absolutely committed to the arts - not only for the enjoyment they bring but also for the huge contribution they make to our local economy," he added.
While the Greenwich Royal Festival is best known as a celebration of maritime culture, participants can also enjoy various showcases of dance, music, art and theatre.
The yearly extravaganza has become a special occasion where the residents can let their hair down and join the thronging crowds enjoying themselves in the streets from dawn until dusk.
On the subject of 2014's agreement to bring the Tall Ships boat race back, Mr Roberts commented that Greenwich's waterfront - the longest in London - makes it the ideal place to witness the event.
The return of the Tall Ships Regatta promises to be a stunning visual display, chock full of opportunities for local young people to experience life on the high seas.
