Greenwich schools ranked as best in the UK
Greenwich primary schools have been rated as being among the best in the UK, according to new research.
Research published by the Royal borough of Greenwich revealed that 11-year-olds' achievement in maths, reading and writing exceeded the national average in all the main measures of achievement and have improved the 2013 results in every category.
The borough's schools came equal fourth in the entire country and equal third in London for reaching or exceeding the required standard (level four) in reading, writing and maths.
Councillor John Fahy, deputy leader of the Royal Borough and Cabinet Member for Children's Services, said: "The results released show further improvement on the already excellent levels of achievement by 11-year-olds in the Royal borough of Greenwich. On every indicator of achievement we are within the top quarter nationally, and mostly in the top ten.
"The fact that Greenwich has been placed equal fourth in the country and third in London for level four and above in reading, writing and mathematics is something that we can be incredibly proud of."
In addition, Greenwich saw 92 per cent of pupils achieving at least a level four or above in reading, two per cent up on last year and two per cent above the national average.
The figures also showed that there was a seven per cent rise in pupils achieving level five or higher in reading.
Mr Fahy, said: "Our excellent results in reading are also very pleasing as we worked particularly hard throughout the year to further improve in this area."
The Royal borough of Greenwich Council also revealed recently that three quarters (74.5 per cent) of pupils achieved A* to C grades in English, in this years GCSE examinations.
In mathematics, two-thirds (67 per cent) achieved A* to C grades - four points higher than the national average.
