Greenwich primary schools see improved performance standards
Families seeking flats to rent in Greenwich will be able to benefit from some of the best primary schools in the country, according to new official figures.
Results published for Key Stage 2 tests from summer 2011 have shown that Greenwich is among the top 25 boroughs in the country in terms of English and maths standards at a primary level, as well as ranking ninth among London authorities.
According to the data, 78 per cent of Greenwich pupils attained the nationally expected quality standard for these two core subjects, an increase of three percentage points on 2010, while the area rates as one of the best in the country for helping students to improve.
Moreover, official government figures have also shown that the area is home to an above-average number of good-quality schools, as well as observing that its educational facilities maintain high levels of safety standards.
Schools in the borough have also shown signs of getting better in the last year, with numerous facilities having recently been upgraded from satisfactory to good, or from good to outstanding.
Jackie Smith, Greenwich Council's cabinet member for children and young people, welcomed the publication of the new report, while highlighting the need to avoid complacency and achieve higher standards across the board.
She said: "These latest figures are a reflection of continued commitment by our schools to improving the outcomes for children.
"They offer further evidence that our school improvement strategies are having an impact on the level of achievement by Greenwich's schools."
The news comes after it was recently revealed that travel guide Frommer's has named Greenwich as one of the top ten destinations in the world for 2012, thanks to its rich cultural heritage and its status as a major hub for Olympic activity next year, with 34 events due to take place there.
