Greenwich primary schools make the top 500 list
Primary schools in Greenwich have been praised for being among the best in the country, it has emerged.
According to a verdict given by the Sunday Times in its influential Top 500 State Primary Schools, nine Greenwich schools were rated as being high achievers.
Out of 32 boroughs in London, Greenwich came third, just behind Richmond and Wandsworth, in terms of the number of schools that make it into the list.
The best performing school was St Peter's RC Primary in Crescent Road, Woolwich. According to the figures, it came 79th out of 17,000 schools in the country.
Some of the runners up on the list included Cherry Orchard Primary School and Halstow Primary School.
Brooklands Primary School was also named as one of the top performers, along with Cardwell Primary School in Woolwich.
Commenting on the achievements, Councillor John Fahy, the deputy leader of the Royal Borough and cabinet member for children's services said: "I am delighted that the work in our primary schools is recognised nationally. It is a great tribute to all the teaching staff and governors, as well as parents.
"The secret of our success is down to our very high of aspirations for Greenwich children. Greenwich schools work together to share best practice across our whole community."
The Key Stage Two results from last year were used to determine which schools should make the top 500 list. In Greenwich, these results have improved year-on-year, placing the borough in the top 25 per cent in terms of educational performance in the country.
The majority of Greenwich schools on the list were judged as 'good' or 'outstanding' by Ofsted, according to the local authority.
Furthermore, 86 per cent of the borough's 11-year-olds achieved the expected standard in reading, writing and maths, compared with the national average of 79 per cent.
This makes Greenwich the fourth best in the country.
