Greenwich Millennium Village gets planning permission
Planning permission has been granted for phases three, four and five of the Greenwich Millennium Village project.
It means people can look forward to 1,746 mixed-tenure new homes being constructed, of which 459 have detailed permission. As a result of the move, anyone who is seeking property to rent in Greenwich should see an increase in options going forward.
The scheme is the result of hard work by Countryside Properties and Taylor Wimpey, in association with the Homes and Communities Agency.
According to the Port of London Authority, the Thames is a "busy working river and this design offers an innovative solution that should allow stylish residential accommodation to co-exist next to essential riverside cargo operations with the impact minimised as far as possible."
Heinz Richardson, director of Jestico + Whiles, which led the team that designed the latest phases, noted at the heart of the process is the "creation of sustainable neighbourhoods". He added the aim of the work is to develop a space that people will feel comfortable being in "through different stages of their lives".
Mr Richardson is hoping that through the design, it will be possible to create a community atmosphere. "Urban squares within the network of streets will offer places for children to play and for social events to take place, while pedestrians and cyclists will be given priority in the heart of the village," he observed.
All of the new homes will have a sustainable element to them and so combined heat and power - such as gas-fired biomass and biofuel - greywater recycling and rainwater harvesting will all be utilised.
Greenwich Millennium Village was purchased by the Homes and Communities Agency in 1997. As part of the Thames Gateway, it is one of Europe's largest regeneration projects. Stretching for some 40 miles from Canary Wharf in London to Southend in Essex and Sittingbourne in Kent, the mostly-derelict land has been regenerated in order to bring the area up to standard.
