Greenwich getting connected to the Internet of Things
Greenwich has been selected as one of ten areas in the UK where the new Internet of Things network will be rolled out. The borough will see the new network installed next year, allowing a cost-effective way for objects to be connected to the internet.
The Internet of Things is designed to allow objects to be connected to the internet, which will also allow each of the objects to be monitored and linked to other items that have been linked up. It has been designed to help businesses and cities cut down on costs, improve services and use technology to provide help to people and places.
The technology will allow, for example, security or light systems in a street to be connected to the internet. This will enable them to be controlled automatically and also remotely, making their operation much easier and more cost-effective.
It could also allow underground pipes to be better monitored for leaks, damage and general wear and tear. This would allow maintenance to take place at earlier stages, limiting damage and costs. The Internet of Things can be connected to a wide range of objects, all of which could help make life easier.
This is the first time the Internet of Things will have been launched Nationwide. It has been set up by two companies: communications infrastructure and media services company, Arqiva and SIGFOX, a pioneer in energy-efficient, cost-effective Internet of Things connectivity.
Councillor Denise Hyland, leader of the Royal borough of Greenwich said: "We really are seeing the future being put into practice here in Greenwich. This kind of technology can be life-transforming and could influence how everyday services and experiences are delivered – from controlling traffic systems to street lighting, parking systems and services, and waste collection levels."
This latest news follows on from the announcement that the area will also be trialling the first driverless cars, showing that the borough is a leading place for digital innovation, Councillor Hyland continued.
The Internet of Things will provide permanent benefits for the borough, with the Nationwide network possibly opening the door for more places to get connected.
