Greenwich Council unveil new proposals for the borough
Greenwich Council has unveiled its plans to make improvements to the borough.
The authority has put forward a series of measures aimed at boosting jobs, improving training and encouraging residents to lead healthier lifestyles.
Projects included under the initiative are supporting small businesses with a taskforce of council officers to help them get maximum benefit from events and activities organised by the council and putting forward proposals to regenerate the Charlton Riverside, Spray Street and Thomas Street areas in Woolwich.
The council has also made plans to increase the provision of affordable housing, and modernise the council's housing repairs service.
In addition, it will also set up a specialist damp team and spend £2 million a year for the next five years on making homes more energy efficient.
Worn-out council estates in the borough will be demolished.
The supply of housing for older people will also be increased. Other proposals will focus on tackling crime in the area, with the aim of achieving a 12.8 per cent reduction over the next three years.
Gang-related crime and domestic violence will be the top issues addressed by the council, with a special team being set up to tackle both.
Commenting on the latest proposals, council leader Denise Hyland said: "These are ambitious plans for the borough which all contribute to improving the lives of residents and businesses and I am pleased to be in a position to report that we are making good progress on achieving the priorities residents have told us they want us to deliver."
Greenwich Council have also put forward plans to develop sports facilities at Sutcliffe Park and Hervey Road, and are set to create a heritage and cultural quarter on the Royal Arsenal.
In addition, it will provide targeted support and work experience for young, unemployed people.
