Greenwich: New leisure complex set to re-shape Woolwich centre
The centre of Woolwich may get revamped with a brand new town centre, it has been revealed.
According to Greenwich Council, the cabinet has considered plans to move the Waterfront Leisure Centre, close the current building on the edge of the town and construct a brand-new centre.
Under the new proposals, the leisure complex will be based in the centre of Woolwich at the site currently occupied by Wilkinsons improving access for residents.
It would also include facilities such as a new cafes, play area, pools, a multi-use sports hall and squash courts.
However the building of the new complex is only a small part of the council's wider plans to regenerate the town centre.
Under plans dubbed 'the Woolwich Masterplan' a new crossrail link will be constructed and is due to open in 2018.
Greenwich Council said that it would make a significant contribution to the rejuvenation of the town by increasing footfall and spend in Woolwich.
Councillor Peter Kotz, cabinet member for Culture and Creative Industries, said: "This is about building a brilliant and modern leisure centre for Woolwich, which will have all the same facilities and family focus as the current Waterfront Centre. Like the Waterfront, it will offer a brilliant all-round sport and leisure facility but in a newer up-to-date building."
Last month, another development known as the Woolwich Square, was named 'Best Town Centre Project'.
The award was given as part of a London-wide award ceremony, which recognises the best schemes that have made a difference to the capital as a whole.
Commenting on the current developments, Mr Kotz continued: "The Waterfront Centre is enjoyed by nearly a million customers a year, but its current location on the fringe of the town centre and across a very busy road is far from ideal. Bringing those people into the heart of the Woolwich instead and into a brilliant brand-new building makes sense for the customers and makes sense for the town as a whole."
