Clapham Junction street improvements unveiled
Residents are set to benefit from new improvements that have been made to the Clapham Junction area in the London borough of Wandsworth.
The first stage of Wandsworth Council's street improvement project is now complete and the result is a more attractive and pedestrian friendly town centre.
Pavements have been widened as part of the revamp, while "unnecessary street clutter" has been removed to give shoppers more space.
High quality granite paving has also been installed to "brighten up" the area and a new diagonal pedestrian crossing has been created to make crossing the street easier and safer.
It is not the first diagonal crossing to appear in Wandsworth. Balham has had one in its town centre for eight years now, allowing pedestrians to cross in one safe movement rather than crossing twice.
The council has published before and after shots of Clapham Junction, which according to its cabinet member for strategic planning and transportation, show just how much has been achieved so far.
"Pavements are wider, it's much easier to cross the main road and the bright paving gives the area a real lift," said councillor Russell King.
"If we want our businesses to thrive then we have to keep investing in our town centres and create attractive shopping environments where people want to come and enjoy their day."
The improvements could provide a further boost to an area that's already very popular among young professionals and families looking for property to rent in Clapham and Battersea.
Mr King said the next stage of the project will now begin, with St John's Road the focus of the works.
He insisted that disruption will be kept to a minimum to ensure that local residents and visitors to the area continue to enjoy easy access to shops and cafes.
Clapham Junction is home to one of the busiest railway stations in Europe, with many routes from Waterloo and Victoria funnelling through it.
