Clapham Junction residents enjoy new Docklands connection
Residents living near Clapham Junction in Battersea have always enjoyed great transport connections into Central London, and now they will have even more travel options.
A new cross-London rail service connecting the busy South-West London station to Surrey Quays in the Docklands area has now opened.
It is hoped that this extension to the London Overground Network will help to ease congestion on existing rail services into Waterloo and Victoria, where commuters catch onward Tubes.
property to rent in Battersea could now prove even more attractive, especially to those who work in Canary Wharf and the wider Docklands area.
But it won't just be Clapham Junction locals who benefit, as the service will stop en route at Wandsworth Road, Clapham High Street, Denmark Hill, Peckham Rye and Queens Road Peckham.
Four trains per hour will depart from Clapham Junction, reaching Surrey Quays in just 24 minutes. Transport for London expects more than 12 million passengers to use the new route each year.
Ravi Govindia, leader of Wandsworth Council, explained the link will prevent commuters from having to travel into Zone 1 unnecessarily, and therefore paying Zone 1 fares.
He also pointed out that it will help to create new jobs in Battersea and provide a boost to the regeneration of Clapham Junction town centre.
"Our next job is to secure major new investment in Clapham Junction station and to bring Tube services to this vital interchange," he stated.
The extension means that the London Overground network now runs all the way around the city centre, as well as out to some of the capital's major suburbs.
London mayor Boris Johnson said: "This fantastic new orbital railway will provide Londoners with the ability to zip around the edge of the city quickly and easily, without the need to travel in and out of the centre."
