Clapham Junction estate to be regenerated
A project has been announced that could see Clapham Junction regenerated.
Housing group Peabody has submitted plans for a £120 million regeneration of its St John's Hill Estate. According to 24dash, a mixture of one, two, three and four-bedroom apartments will be constructed under the proposals.
Of the 527 residential projects to be built, 278 will be affordable and the other 249 will be put forward for private sale. The development could have a positive knock-on effect for those seeking property to rent in Clapham.
Peabody's project leader, Richard Stanway-Williams, said the plan is part of a wider strategy of integrating developments "into the wider community". He added this will see the construction of open spaces and a community centre.
"I am especially pleased with the quality of the architecture and landscaping. This is echoed by the residents who are really engaged and excited about the work we are doing," Mr Stanway-Williams stated.
He went on to note a considerable amount of time has been spent on the issue of redevelopment since 2007. The opinions of residents, local stakeholders and the wider community have also been sought.
Phil Villars, managing director of Indigo Planning - which is advising Peabody throughout the process - said: "These plans will offer Peabody's residents a higher standard of living in larger and more sustainable homes, making more efficient use of [the] site."
One of the prime reasons the area will be desirable is its proximity to Clapham Junction, which is just opposite it. As a major transport hub, it provides people with easy access to different locations in London.
A number of energy-efficient measures are being included in the programme, including the installation of solar photovoltaic panels. It means residents will be able to make savings on the cost of their energy bills, as they will be getting some of their electricity from the sun - a free source. In general, the bigger the solar PV system, the more effective it will be.
