New development to create homes in east Putney
More flats to rent in Putney could be created following the approval of new development plans this month.
Wandsworth Council's planning applications committee has ratified proposals to redevelop a disused site opposite the East Putney Tube station, which will involve the demolition of outdated office buildings.
In their place, 148 new homes would be created, including 34 apartments for people who cannot afford to buy, while space for shops, businesses, restaurants and leisure facilities will also be provided.
Other elements of the redevelopment scheme include a £1 million investment to improving local infrastructure, plus the creation of around 170 full-time jobs.
Wandsworth Council's planning chairman Nick Cuff said: "The scheme will bring a disused brownfield site back into use and comes with a hefty contribution towards smartening up the station."
Next week, Putney will usher in the start of its local festive celebrations by switching on the Christmas lights and opening up the seasonal market.
