Tooting to see opening of new free school
Families seeking flats to rent in Tooting could welcome news that a traditionally-styled free school is set to open in the area.
The Michaela Community School has received approval by the Department for Education and will open in September 2012, providing places for 120 pupils each year.
It will be organised around the principle of offering a distinctive ethos typically associated with high-end private schools, with a strong focus on academic subjects, discipline and high expectations.
Additionally, measures will be taken to address common issues that hold back inner-city youth, with personalised support to be offered to students that require it.
The school is named after a local teacher who died earlier this year and was widely respected for her old-school values and interest in academic success.
Kathy Tracey, education spokesman for Wandsworth Council, said: "This is exciting news for Tooting and will ensure that parents have even greater choice when it comes to selecting a secondary school for their children."
This comes after a consultation was launched earlier this week on plans to add an extra 210 primary school places to the Wandsworth area as a whole.
