Wandsworth secures funding for transport upgrades
property to rent in Wandsworth has always been attractive thanks to the borough's close proximity to Central London and its excellent transport links, despite the lack of Tube stops in the area.
Indeed, excellent rail and bus routes allow residents to get in and out of the heart of the capital quickly and easily, and Underground lines do serve several parts of the borough.
There is also an extension to the Northern Line being planned, which will run through Battersea and provide even more choice for local people.
And now Wandsworth Council has announced that it has secured £3.8 million in funding from the mayor of London to deliver a number of local transport improvements.
The upgrades are designed to benefit road users, cyclists and pedestrians and will also support the creation of new jobs in the borough.
In Clapham Junction £100,000 will be spent on an ongoing scheme to tackle traffic congestion by improving the road layout, renewing road surfaces and decluttering footways.
Around £260,000 has been earmarked for improvements on Old York Road between the railway bridge and Ferrier Street, where the station forecourt and adjacent street will benefit from new granite paving and upgraded cycle parking, while the pedestrian crossing will also be widened.
Another £400,000 will be put towards the extension of the Barclays Cycle Hite scheme in Wandsworth, with around 60 new docking stations due to be installed around the borough in 2013. Putney and Battersea will be just two of the areas to benefit.
And finally £350,000 will be spent on street and transport improvements to the town centre in Balham, including Bedford Hill and Hildreth Street.
Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: "This funding will benefit all of London and everyone living in, working in or visiting Wandsworth.
"A world class city deserves a world class transport system and the borough will use this money to make significant improvements for local people."
