Wandsworth Eco Fund deadline approaches
Green initiatives in Wandsworth can still apply for funding from the Wandsworth Eco Fund.
Groups that have schemes capable of increasing recycling, reducing energy usage, waste or carbon emissions and encouraging sustainable travel will be considered for the £5,000 award. The deadline for submissions is May 18th and so organisations have to be quick in order to put their name forward.
The range of projects that will be supported could entice those looking at flats to rent in Wandsworth as they will guarantee a greener future for the borough. Some 17 schemes were successful with their applications in 2011. These included a composter for allotments at King George's Park and a garden shredder for the Ethelburga Garden Club in Battersea.
"Council officers are available to discuss ideas for projects with residents before they complete their funding application - which could improve their chances of being awarded funding," Wandsworth Council observed.
It is hoped community-wide that the environmental-friendliness of the area will be improved. Projects do not have to be overly-complicated in order to be victorious and submissions for community gardens, screening for recycling banks and give-and-take days are welcomed.
The borough is also hoping to encourage people to take up cycling. Wandsworth Council has joined forces with British Cycling and Team Sky to offer a 12-month initiative designed to get more individuals on their bike.
Head of parks and leisure services at the local authority Simon Ingyon said: "A programme of organised bicycle rides is being devised to inspire residents - whether they currently own a bike or not - to get out there and give it a go."
He added the project is perfect for anyone who has drive and enthusiasm and is hopeful that post-Olympics there will be a sustained interest in cycling in the area.
