Wandsworth Council revamps borough in multi-million pound improvement project
Wandsworth Council has announced that it will be making a number of changes to the town centre, as part of a multi-million pound improvement project.
These changes, which are taking place in Battersea, will see a number of new developments to make it more appealing to shoppers and residents.
This is all part of an extensive scheme in Clapham Junction town centre which has seen pavements widened, roads resurfaced and a new diagonal pedestrian crossing installed.
Additionally, the project will include the introduction of light granite paving slabs, improved lighting and new street furniture.
The council has also endorsed a proposal to seek necessary highway and traffic consents to introduce a crossing at the Brighton Yard entrance.
It is hoped that the regeneration work will create a much more attractive and pedestrian-friendly environment.
Russell King, Wandsworth Council's cabinet member for strategic planning and transportation, said some of the benefits of the overhaul have already helped residents.
He added: "If we want our town centres to thrive then we have to keep investing in them - creating appealing shopping environments for residents, visitors and businesses alike.
"Many people have already benefitted from the changes and – given that Clapham Junction is one of the busiest stations around – I'm sure that many more will in the months and years to come, especially as more work is planned."
Previous developments have included improvements to St John's Road. The busy crossroads outside Clapham Junction Station were redesigned, which has helped to improve the flow of traffic.
In addition, measures were put in place to improve cycle safety and pavements were widened.
The new changes have been backed by Transport for London and the Clapham Junction Town Centre Partnership. It was funded through a ring fenced transport grant.
