Wandsworth Council announces further regeneration work
Residents in Wandsworth are to see further improvements to their local town centre after new works to aid access for pedestrians were announced.
Wandsworth Council said it is about to begin laying new pavements along the western side of Garratt Lane near the Southside Shopping Centre.
The work is scheduled to begin this month and end sometime in March, coinciding with a new phase of redevelopment at the popular retail complex.
Shoppers will soon see the opening of two new restaurants, and there are negotiations going on with businesses over the launch of new stores.
Once this phase is complete the project will move on and see the demolition of Arndale House and Arndale Walk towards the end of this year.
This will make way for 100,000 square feet of retail space, much of which will be occupied by the department store chain Debenhams, due to open to the public in 2015.
Neil Churchill, general manager of the Southside Shopping Centre, said: "Southside's reputation as a leading retail and leisure destination for South-West London is developing fast and we see Debenhams' commitment as a key step in developing it further.
"A department store for Wandsworth will provide another exciting draw, alongside the Cineworld cinema, our great range of retail names and the growing mix of restaurants and cafes."
Wandsworth Council has made a number of improvements to the town centre in recent years, all of which have benefitted local residents and attracted more visitors to the area.
They include the opening of a new library and several developments on Hardwick's Way, Smuggler's Way, Buckhold Road and at South Thames College.
There are also plans to switch part of the one-way traffic system back to a two-way network to relieve some of the pressure on the high street.
These and the latest improvements could well boost demand for property to rent in Wandsworth as well, providing even more local amenities and making the roads safer.
