Walk4Life scheme co-ordinated by Wandsworth Council
Wandsworth Council has launched a new initiative designed to boost the health and wellbeing of residents in the borough.
It kickstarted a scheme called Walk4Life, which is run by the Ramblers and Macmillan Cancer Support.
The aim of the project is to encourage residents to lead a healthier lifestyle. Changes have also been made to its accreditation criteria, meaning residents can have greater confidence in quality of the initiative.
Commenting on the developments, Councillor Jim Maddan, the council’s health spokesman, said: “I’m delighted that the hard work of our scheme co-ordinators here at the council and the volunteers out in the community that lead our walks has been recognised. Walking brings so many health benefits, and taking part in one of our walks means you are supported every step of the way.”
The walks are short, close to the local areas in which they are based and free to Wandsworth residents.
Each journey is no longer than 90 minutes long, with at least one walk of less than half an hour every month.
The aim of the shorter walks is to encourage newcomers and those with long term health conditions to get involved.
It is one of a series of new developments taking place in Wandsworth. Recently, the council announced the launch of a new one-way system in the borough, which would see cars and lorries diverted away from the town centre’s main shopping and commercial areas.
Wandsworth Council officials claim that the changes will result in a significant reduction in traffic between Fairfield Street and Putney Bridge Road. The project is also designed to provide more space for pedestrians and cyclists, while still allowing buses to operate within the area.
In addition many footpaths across the borough will be widened significantly, while new trees and vegetation will be planted along certain routes. The council is currently consulting with residents on these new developments.
