Putney High Street to see environmental improvements
Wandsworth Council has confirmed that Putney High Street is to undergo a series of environmental improvements as part of a £250,000 investment programme.
New trees are to be planted and measures are to be put in place to reduce traffic congestion and pollution, making the area safer, healthier and more attractive for residents and visitors.
Pavements will be upgraded to provide better access for pedestrians and changes will be made to the road layout, which will boost traffic flow and reduce the change of hold-ups.
Wandsworth Council's transport spokesman Russell King said: "Our aim is to tackle some of the issues that affect the southern end of the high street.
"We plan to remove much of the unnecessary street clutter and guardrails that hem people in and obstruct them as they walk along this part of the high street.
"We are also looking to widen footpaths where we can and change the layouts of some bus stops and also move the taxi rank in a bid to free up road space and remove some of the high street's pinch points where vehicles can be held up by buses and taxis."
Not only will this reduce delays for drivers and speed up journey times for bus passengers, it will also have a positive impact on air quality levels in the local area, he insisted.
Work is already underway to make Putney a greener place. The council has been working closely with Transport for London and as a result 46 buses that run along the High Street have been replaced with cleaner vehicles, including ten hybrid models.
Such moves are likely to please local residents concerned about pollution levels in their area and also boost the appeal of property to rent in Putney among those looking for a safe, clean part of London to live in.
