New flats and shops to be built on Wandsworth High Street
Wandsworth Council has announced that a number of new homes and shops are to be built on Wandsworth High Street, breathing new life into the area.
It said that the derelict Lyon House - an office block that has been empty for three years now - is to be demolished to make way for the new development.
A total of 41 new flats will be built on the site, in addition to retail space that will enable new businesses to move into Wandsworth Town.
The project is part of a wider £1 billion regeneration scheme which the local authority hopes will make the area even more attractive.
property to rent in Wandsworth Town is already highly desirable due to its location close to Central London and the wide variety of flats, apartments and houses available.
Nick Cuff, planning spokesman for Wandsworth Council, said: "The redevelopment of Lyon House will be a further boost to the ongoing town centre regeneration.
"Not only will it encourage new businesses to set up shop in Wandsworth, it will also create much-needed new homes."
Ravi Govindia, council leader and regeneration spokesman, pointed out that the area has already benefitted from a new town centre library and a revamped shopping centre complex as part of the regeneration programme.
"These schemes bring new retail, leisure, residential, employment and educational opportunities to area and act as magnets for further investment," he remarked.
In addition to the new flats and retail space, residents in Wandsworth will also benefit from improvements to the road network, including a reconfiguration of the area's one-way traffic system.
It is hoped that this will relieve pressure on the high street and help to create a more welcoming atmosphere for locals and visitors alike.
Wandsworth Council points to a similar initiative around Old York Road on the late 1980s, which saw the introduction of a new section of the A217.
This ensured that heavy traffic was diverted away from the street, which is now a popular part of town boasting independent boutiques, pavement cafes and other thriving businesses.
