Mitcham to see new store opening as regeneration begins
Mitcham has continued to attract new business to the area, benefiting locals by providing more amenities. The latest store to be opening is WHSmith, which is set to open its doors just in time for Christmas on December 15th.
The store, which is located on London Road, will be officially opened by the mayor of Merton Agatha Akigyina and the owner of the property, Vijay Patel, at 10am. Mr Patel will be running the store, which is to be one of WHSmith's franchise shops, WHSmith Local, which were launched earlier this year.
This new store follows on from a successful Christmas light switch on, which saw Mitcham host the borough's event. It is contributing to a better shopping experience for residents, along with the other shops in the town centre.
Ms Akygyina said: “Mitcham and the people who live here are very much in my heart and it’s great to see new and exciting things happening here. Successful local businesses are vital to a thriving local economy as are good transport links and a place where people want to enjoy and spend time. Mr Patel knows Mitcham and his customers and I am very pleased to be officially opening this new WHSmith Local which I am sure will thrive under his management.”
As the town centre grows, it will create a greater economic return for the area, benefiting those that live there and all businesses. It could also help to make the town centre more attractive for other shops, further increasing the choice of stores for shoppers and creating a strong retail hub.
Councillor Andrew Judge, Merton Council cabinet member for environmental sustainability, said: “The opening of a new WHSmith Store is very welcome and a milestone in the regeneration of Mitcham. We will be making a number of improvements to the town centre in the first half of next year, including landscaping Fair Green and the space surrounding it as well as bringing back the refurbished clock tower."
