Battersea Power Station development given go-ahead
A development scheme that could boost the amount of property to rent in the London borough of Wandsworth has been approved by the government.
Communities and local government secretary Eric Pickles has given the green light to plans from developer Treasury Holdings to regenerate the grade II Battersea Power Station.
The project, which is expected to see construction start in 2012, will create more than 3,400 new homes in the area and see the power station opened to the public for the first time.
In addition, the development includes an extension of the Northern Line from Kennington, which will see one Tube station built at Battersea Power Station and another on Wandsworth Road.
Nick Cuff, planning applications committee chairman at Wandsworth Council, commented: "Thousands of badly needed homes and jobs will be created across the site and the Northern Line extension will breathe new life into this part of Central London."
Treasury Holdings managing director Rob Tincknell thanked the local community, Wandsworth Council, London mayor Boris Johnson and Mr Pickles for offering their support to the project.
