Battersea: From rags to riches

Battersea: From rags to richesBackground

Situated in the London borough of Wandsworth, the district of Battersea could hold a number of interesting features for those looking to rent a property in the capital. While it was once known as one of the more working-class areas of the city, Battersea has been transformed into a vibrant, upmarket option.

Offering a wide variety of international cuisine, excellent pubs and a plethora of supermarkets and local grocers, the area could be considered a gastronomic dream. Those wanting to enjoy a show can instead visit one of Battersea's main social hotspots - St Johns Hill, Lavender Hill or Latchmere Road - in order to take in some of the better know clubs and comedy venues.

People interested in renting a property in Battersea may be encouraged to hear that it offers excellent green space, including the local attraction of Battersea Park. This family-friendly riverside location is popular with residents on the weekends and even has a zoo for the kids.

property to rent in Battersea

Property to rent in the London borough of Battersea comes in all shapes and sizes, but one feature that is present throughout is the quality of maintenance and repair. Victorian and Edwardian residences are common throughout the district, with terraces in the centre and two and three-storey houses in the area between Wandsworth and Clapham commons.

Someone looking to buy a house in Wandsworth in May of this year would have to pay £376,077 on average, a 14.3 per cent annual rise when compared with 2009 figures, according to the Land Registry. This is more than double the £165,314 the organisation claimed is the national average across England and Wales in June 2010 and over £30,000 in excess of typical London prices.

However, the outlay for property to rent in Battersea could encourage people to instead consider this type of arrangement, with a two-bedroom property costing £1,859 a month and, for those who want something a bit bigger, £2,609 a month for a three-bedroom option. Studio apartments are also available for £1,018 a month, while weekly contracts for this sized abode will see residents pay around £235 every seven days.

This is not to say that property to rent in Battersea cannot be found cheaper, as some studio domiciles can be clinched for as little as £138 a week, while the most cost-effective monthly contracts come in at just £598.

Transport links

Battersea has excellent train links for those opting for this mode of public transport. Queenstown Road and Battersea Park stations are available to residents and offer them the chance to travel in and out of the capital, while Clapham Junction is also located in the district.

The reason Clapham Junction is named as it is, despite not being located there, is because historically Battersea had been known as a poor location, although it has certainly upped its reputation since those early days. Those looking to take the Tube will need to journey to Clapham common, but the area does have excellent bus links to the rest of London.
