Work to begin on a housing development
Work is set to begin on a housing development in Sutton, after being given the go-ahead by the council, it has been revealed.
Some 158 homes are set to be built on the Felnex site in Hackbridge, with later stages of the development expected to bring more homes, after being granted planning permission.
Following outline consent in 2012, alongside the permission for homes, developers are also set to build a new food store with underground parking for 206 cars, a cafe and energy centre, a new road access and cycle route on the London Road.
Commenting on the developments, Neil Rowley, director of planning at Savills, said: "We have worked with the council and local people to bring forward a sustainable form of development of which we will all be able to be proud."
Demolition work has started on site and preparation is expected to start later in the year.
In an interview, published by Inside Housing, Richard Clifton, chair of Sutton Council’s planning committee, said: "The Felnex development will be one of the most sustainable neighbourhoods in the country. It will combine much-needed homes with health and care facilities with an energy centre which will help power the site.
"The Felnex development is a great example of how Sutton is leading the way when it comes to promoting sustainable living. The development is in keeping with Sutton’s One Planet commitment to reduce CO2 emissions and household waste to make this new community one of the greenest in Britain."
The development is part of a wider pattern across the UK, where house building is on the rise. In fact, separate figures published by Persimmon showed that the number of completions by 28 per cent to 6,408.
In addition, the London Assembly has previously announced plans to build thousands of new homes across the city.
Some £400 million will go towards delivering 20 new housing zones in the capital. Of that funding, the Assembly will be providing £200 million.
