Sutton residents to gain £44k grant
People living in property to rent in the London borough of Sutton have the chance to transform their gardens into a wildlife haven thanks to a new grant.
Some £44,900 has been awarded to Sutton Council by the Heritage Lottery Fund to encourage the development of natural wildlife habitats in the area.
Councillor Colin Hall, executive member for environment and climate change at Sutton Council, said that Sutton is already one of the greenest boroughs in London, but environmental habitats are decreasing in number.
"Everyone with a garden or open space can play a major part in protecting endangered species and stopping the decline of our wildlife," he added.
Part of the money will be used to fund a number of public events and workshops to show local people how they can create an oasis for wild animals and plants.
Earlier this month, a new lavender bed was planted near to the Benhill Recreation Ground's main entrance, using plants donated by Mayfield Lavender.
