Sutton residents given powers to make changes
Those living in property to rent in the London borough of Sutton are to take part in a pioneering new trial that will see them gain powers to change their local area for the better.
Through the Neighbourhood Development Order, residents of Hackbridge will be able to determine many things, including the locations of shops, offices and schools and they will also be able to set standards of design for new property in the area.
Hackbridge is one of 17 communities from across the UK chosen to pilot the government's Neighbourhood Planning Front Runner scheme, which is part of the Localism Bill.
Councillor Jayne McCoy, Sutton Council's executive member for planning, economic development and housing, said she was "delighted" that Hackbridge had been picked.
"There's a long history of strong community involvement in the area, and we look forward to working with the whole community on this exciting project," she added.
Sutton residents were recently urged to make sure that they are on the electoral register so that they can take part in the poll on the Alternative Vote on Thursday May 5th.
