People in flats to rent in Sutton can play a part in their Big Society
The launch of a book-share scheme may benefit tenants in flats to rent in the London borough of Sutton.
Sutton Council leader Sean Brennan said the project is an example of prime minister David Cameron's Big Society idea in action.
He noted Sutton had been chosen as one of the test areas for the scheme because of its "vibrant communities".
This latest project will demonstrate how members of the community can help others, he added.
Residents will be able to share their own books with neighbours and access other titles that may not be stocked in the local library due to their obscurity.
Mr Brennan stated while the area's library service is one of the best on offer in the country, it would be a waste of taxpayer's money to hold a book only accessed once a year.
"But if somebody in the community had a copy, they could lend it from their own collection," he noted.
Earlier this week, Barnet & Dagenham Council announced individuals - such as those using flats to rent in the borough – could now revise for the theory part of their driving test in its libraries.
