Free gym memberships for Roehampton residents
Roehampton residents could benefit from free swimming or gym membership thanks to Wandsworth Council's new scheme. People within the area that commit to living a healthier lifestyle could be rewarded by the council, which wants to encourage more people to eat and live healthier.
The council's public health department is offering the free memberships as part of their campaign to improve residents' health. Locals will be able to claim a membership to Putney Leisure Centre for free swimming or a gym membership at Roehampton Sport and Fitness Centre, so long as they fulfil necessary criteria.
In order to claim one of the free memberships, residents must complete one of a set of requirements beforehand. These include activities such as attending 11 out of 12 sessions for Adult Weight Management, or using the Stop Smoking service in the borough to successfully quit smoking.
Free memberships can also be claimed by those that complete a Change Champion course. The course gives individuals the chance to learn about ways to improve health and wellbeing. People may also be eligible for a free membership after completing a recognised health qualification.
The new Roehampton Challenge project seeks to promote healthy living by allowing residents to access a number of different services that can advise and help them be healthier. Residents can go to a number of activity sessions, support services and community schemes.
Councillor Ravi Govindia said: "We want to help people lead healthier lives - whether this be through improving access to health services, establishing healthy living schemes or simply by creating more opportunities to get active.
"The free gym and swimming offer is just one of many elements in the Roehampton Challenge, and we hope it will inspire local people who may be looking to make a positive change in their life."
The new scheme has been launched alongside the Health and Wellbeing Fund, which allows local groups to bid for council grants of between £5,000 and £10,000 to provide services and activities to the borough to promote healthy living.
