Coombe: An affluent and upmarket suburb of London

Coombe: An affluent and upmarket suburb of LondonCoombe is a tranquil and affluent suburb of London which lies within the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames.

Life in this area is in many ways idealistic. It is is home to a number of good schools, there are many leisurely activities to get involved in and it has seen its fair share of regeneration over the years.

Some people say that it is worlds apart from many of the less affluent parts of London. In this suburb, the elderly are well catered for, the schools are known for their excellence and it has more than its fair share of notable people.

In fact, when it comes to education, there is a mixture of state and private schools, which is a big attraction for many families.

One of the wealthiest parts of the suburb is Coombe Park, a private road. On this strip, you can generally expect to pay in excess of around £3 million, as a starting point.

Properties in both Coombe and across Kingston-Upon-Thames in general tend to be a mix of Victorian and inter-war houses, in addition to plush, riverside flats.

On the Coombe estate between Kingston Hill and Coombe Lane West, detached houses often sell for over £2 million.

The most expensive property currently for sale in the area  is a nine-bedroom Edwardian house in George Road, priced at £10 million.

Coombe itself is magnificent as a suburb, but what makes it even more appealing is the surrounding areas, which are equally as desirable.

To the north of the area is Richmond Park and to the East is Wimbledon Common.

Properties

When discussing properties in the area, one of the words which come to mind is 'luxurious'. Properties in this area tend to be aimed at the more affluent citizens and can set you back over £1 million.

However, depending on which area you live, it may be possible to pick up a slightly cheaper property. For example, in north Kingston there are attractive streets of three- and four-bedroom Victorian semis that sell for between £600,000 and £750,000.

You can also pick up detached Victorian villas that fetch between £750,000 and £1.2 million.

If you move further south into Kingston-Upon-Thames, you can pick up a two bedroom semi for about £475,000.

Kingston Upon Thames

Coombe is one of the nicer areas in Kingston. However that is not to say Kingston is not a nice area to live - in fact it is just the opposite.

The borough benefits from a comprehensive range of shops, a number of cultural landmarks and buildings, as well as vast green spaces and parks.

Kingston has one of the busiest shopping centres in London and the south-east. It also has a thriving marketplace, that contains an interesting mix of medieval and modern buildings.

The high street has a significant proportion of well-known brands, along with some independent stores.

In addition, there are a variety of fantastic restaurants and upmarket eateries to get your teeth into.

Kingston is also home to the Rose Theatre which was founded by Sir Peter Hall. It seats approximately 899 people and produces its own shows. It also hosts visiting companies.

The Kingston Museum is also another major attraction for visitors and features a number of different photographic exhibitions.

Local groups are also able to display their artwork, photographs and details about their activities.

Notable Residents

You'd be surprised at the number of famous faces that have resided in Coombe. Television personalities such as Jimmy Tarbuck live in the area, as does the tennis player Annabel Croft.

Elisabeth Murdoch also lived in Coombe for several years and so did Dwight D. Eisenhower, who lived in 'Telegraph Cottage' which is located opposite a golf course in the area.
