Area Comments
One of London's most famous suburbs, Wimbledon is affluent and highly sought after in all its areas. With fantastic local resources and amenities, it might be said to be suffering an embarrassment of riches. This is affluent suburbia to the max, and a target for anyone who wants to live it large, well, and in relaxation.
Homes in the area cover a wide range. In South Wimbledon there are excellent, compact streets of very fine Victorian and Edwardian terraces, and there are excellent constructions of luxury flats in the centre of the area and up Wimbledon Hill. In the roads that lead between the Park and the Common, there are some absolutely stunning, large detached homes, both Edwardian and Victorian. If you're in the village, you're looking at some superb streets, wide and leafy, of Victorian houses that are almost all imposing and excellent in quality. Obviously, all properties overlooking the Common itself are going to have a premium attached.
Wimbledon Village and South Wimbledon used to have a vast differential in price, with the former, near to the tennis, hugely more costly. Though this has shrunk, they are still different places. South Wimbledon is essentially Wimbledon's Croydon, with a lot of shopping, excellent transport links, and very good restaurants and coffee shops amongst the high street brands. Wimbledon Village is filled with gorgeous boutiques and salons, excellent high-class furnishings and fashion as well as excellent restaurants, and feels semi-rural as opposed to its neighbour's more upfront milieu.
Both share however stunning overall resources. They border the biggest green space in London, the immense Wimbledon Common/Richmond Park sprawl in which you could happily lose a few towns. Next to the tennis club as well is the area's own little park, with golf, bowls, cricket and boating. There are lots of good schools around both areas, several excellent hospitals - it's basically got everything.
Wimbledon has everything you might want to get - great houses, unparalleled resources, and a generally lovely setting. Of course all locals know how to get into town, but unless they have to, they probably don't see the point.

Balham
Balham is an area of south London which may well be said to fit better than some into the notion of the metropolis really being a collection of villages. That idea may be hard to sustain amid the skyscrapers of the city or Canary Wharf, or the endless Portland Stone white mews of the west end. But Balham may just have a hint of this vibe.
