Merton Council nominated for transport awards
Top of the range transport routes will always be attractive to London residents.
This is why people looking at flats to rent in Merton may be interested to know the council has been nominated for six London Transport Awards - more than any other local authority in the city. A range of improvements have been made to Wimbledon and as a result of these the council could be celebrating a big win.
As well as widening the pavements, cycle lanes and stands were introduced, while clearer signage and brand new seating were installed. Wimbledon mainline station is also in the running for the Rail Station of the Year award thanks to the work done on the refurbished forecourt
Merton Council cabinet member for environmental sustainability and regeneration Andrew Judge stated the recognition is "testament to the dedication" of Transport for London, FM Conway, South West Trains and Network Rail. "We have all worked together to create a new and more attractive Wimbledon. In short, we have made Wimbledon a destination to be proud of," he added.
Andrew Hansen, chief operating officer of FM Conway - which is one of the contractors employed by the local authority - said he is "delighted" to see the project rewarded by being nominated for so many accolades. He continued by saying the recognition is an example of the skills his firm possesses when it comes to urban regeneration.
The council recently unveiled a new scheme that will offer residents the opportunity to adopt a green space. It is hoped the initiative can help to improve the look of the local parks and roadsides - and Transition Town Wimbledon and Sustainable Merton are behind it.
Mr Judge observed it is an excellent opportunity for residents to have a "direct input" in looking after green areas of the borough as they can now take control of a portion of it.
